Great Escape & Jersey Live Lounge

Brighton – Fortune of War

Played some great gigs this weekend. Friday night we were in Brighton for the Great Escape festival. Sunday Best had us down for a set at The Fortune of War, which is a little venue right on the sea front. The stage was TINY! But we really enjoyed it, the venue felt pretty packed. We had to leave early to get back to London, so we didn’t manage to catch Beardyman’s set. Next time. I saw a bit of David E. Sugar though. First time I’ve seen him with his band, it sounded wicked. Props to the drummer with the Simmonds electric bass drum!

I am not a number…

Maintaining the jet set life style, Saturday night saw us setting up in Jersey. We all agreed that we’d need to stay at least a week longer to work out what Jersey is all about! Just can’t quite put your finger  on it!

It was a great night, the set went down really well. Probably the loudest gig we’ve played in a while, but I think that’s how they like it there! We also had our first ever fight, which broke out in the audience whilst we were playing End Times! Not quite sure if it was the lyrical content that sparked it… probably just the booze. Thanks to Jamie from Benny the Moth for having us over and looking out for us while we were there, we had a great time.

Sound of Rum Acoustic

Last night we were invited to play unplugged in a Hampstead living room! Check out the website, the night is called Songs from a Room. It was really interesting for us to play acoustic versions of our songs. Especially as our live set up is getting bigger and bigger, it was refreshing to go back to basics and just play the key parts of each arrangement.

The evening was filmed and recorded so hopefully there’ll be some footage to follow soon. Otherwise, you can catch our next acoustic set at Pure Groove in Farringdon on 5th July.

Set List:

1. Would Be Has Been

2. Best Intentions

3. End Times

A Rum Weekend – Ivyhouse, Flowerpot

Played a great gig at the Ivyhouse in Nunhead. Nice intimate setting. We we’re confident enough to attempt some live drum looping. We’ve been thinking about doing it for well over a year now. I’m happy to say it worked out alright! And as the microphone was set up anyway, we thought we’d try our hands at some live crowd looping! That’s right, next time you come see Sound of Rum you too could be part of the performance!

The night was rounded off by Kwake, who’s set blew me away.

Very impressive. Controlling and triggering samples whilst drumming, bleeding each tune into the next for a solid hour and a half, with a cypher at the end featuring our very own Kate Tempest!

The best bit for me was the MF DOOM medley half way through the set. The audio quality on my camera is not great but hopefully you get the idea!

Sunday night we were at the Flowerpot in Kentish Town for their 1st birthday party. We only played a short set, but it was a good one and a good night! Cheers Jay.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday) we’re playing in someone’s living room in Hampstead! Check out www.sofarsounds.com/
